Décor Kitchens & Interiors magazine shares a
look inside the latest in kitchen design trends.
When it comes to countertops, the timeless look of brilliant quartz is here to stay. It’s virtually in- destructible, although protection is needed from direct contact with hot pots. On the other hand, granite — the mainstay of the last two decades — appears to be ending its run. The look now seems dated in modern kitchens, and because it is po- rous, it can collect bacteria if not properly cared for. There is also an increasing number of concrete backsplashes, countertops, and ooring, which are great options for a budget-friendly kitchen and convey a modern, yet industrial, feel.
For tile, consider adding exotic air with intri- cately pa erned Spanish- and Moroccan-inspired tiles and backsplashes. These o er a much more substantial visual impact than typical subway tiles. Terrazzo tile is also making a comeback. Popular in the 1950s and ’60s, Terrazzo is resurfacing as a playful touch for Mid-Century designs that con- tinue to gain popularity.
White kitchens are also on the way out. While they may seem to have timeless appeal, white n- ishes require more daily care to maintain a bright, clean look. There are so many other alternatives available that provide a rich, warm look for today’s homes. For example, earthy or vibrant tones add a sense of energy and a comfortable environment.
White kitchens with a clean, Minimalist aesthetic (GE appliances are seen here) remain popular, but look for a shi to o -white colors soon.

And for those who want to take the drama a step further, black-hued kitchen designs add an elegant sense of drama and are easier to manage; it’s a sophisticated alternative to white and ivory.
Stainless steel no longer o ers the “wow” ef- fect it used to have. Today, designers are adding pops of color from bold primaries to so pastels on ranges, hoods, and other appliances.
Clean lines and minimal designs continue to be strong. As part of that, there is an e ort to clear countertops and upper-mounted appliances and install them instead within lower cabinetry positions.
There is also a trend developing toward the re- freshing look of taller column refrigerators. These vertically extended models take up less oor space and provide more visual impact than those of standard height.
And while the Farmhouse style still has legs, consider unique statement-making options with intricate designs, unexpected materials, and stunning xtures that give a sense of everyday opulence.
