Linda Longo: What was your design inspiration for the line?
Diane Keaton: Honesty it was from my own house, the one that is featured in my book The House That Pinterest Built. I gravitate to black, grey, and white so that was my initial inspiration. Then I like to mix bold patterns, men’s suiting, or even graphic designs to complete a room. I am not afraid of making a statement. I like sturdy materials like chain, rope, and steel. Mixing the elements appeals to me the most.
LL: Were any pieces in the line inspired by styles you have in your home, interpretations from designs seen during your travels, or based on ideas of what you’d like to have in a future home?
DK: Not from travels actually, but more from look- ing and exploring on the internet. I love exploring the world of visuals. Not only do I continue to cut and paste my way through shelter magazines, I also constantly create Pinterest boards which I get lost in. I am still a person who likes to go out shopping in the stores. My sister, Dorrie Hall, and her business (Monterey Garage) is a great start- ing point and we find items together. Also, I shop at local spots like Galerie Half, Obsolete, and Big Daddy’s Antiques. I love flea markets as well. Oh wait...another secret is 360 Volt in Amsterdam! They have a vast array of vintage lights that I have indulged in a few times.
LL: Who do you see as the customer for the line? Is it someone who loves Transitional, Traditional, Farmhouse, or Eclectic décor or is the beauty of the line that there are styles that transcend typical classification?
DK: Honestly anyone. As you can see from my line with Aidan Gray, I am not afraid of the size of shades. I want them to make a statement...a Wow factor. I love the lights bundled together in differ- ent sizes. This collection comes in an array of sizes that can appeal to all room sizes. I think they are
a great representation of Modern Farmhouse as well as a twist on Traditional lighting. They are cur- rent and clean. No fuss! Gosh, I love that. I can’t wait to remodel another home so I can include these. I, too, will be a consumer!
LL: Which is your favorite piece in
the line and why?
DK: They are like children, so I love them all. Right now, I gravitate toward the bold black-and-white stripe in the kitchen. I think it is a statement piece. I also think the black marble is unique and bold. I am pleased with all of them to be honest. Do you want to hear something funny? I love a dimmer. Mood lighting makes a light, and wait until you see how they look when they are hung in a room and a dimmer is used!
LL: For consumers unsure of what their style
is or who are nervous about choosing the right style of lighting for their home, what would your advice be based on your collection?
DK: Listen to yourself. Pick what you feel is right for you. I am not a person who gives advice; rather, I say to go with what you feel will make you happy in your home. Home is where the heart is!
Diane Keaton is delivering the first keynote at the fall High Point Market on Saturday, October 19, inside the High Point Theatre next to the IHFC building.
In her presentation, she will share how her pas- sion for interior design led to the launch of Keaton Industries and to the debut of her lighting collection with Aidan Gray. A book-signing event featuring The House That Pinterest Built will immediately fol- low at the Theatre.
The entire second floor of the Aidan Gray show- room building will be devoted to the Diane Keaton Collection. The Aidan Gray showroom (201 N.
