Recently Tallahassee, Fla.-based Golden Lighting team worked with the staff and students of Florida State University (FSU) to hold a collegiate-level lighting design competition. This is the second time the manufacturer has held the contest; last year, the company partnered with the University of Central Oklahoma.
“We saw some great designs; our judges debated heavily before choosing the winners,” says Danielle Dzurik, Golden Lighting’s Product Design Manager. “We chose to work with Florida State University because the school has a great design program and it is local.”
FSU students were taught the basics of lighting design and asked to use what they learned to design LED bath fixtures of their own. Contestants were judged based on the creativity, functionality, and the marketability of their products.
All of the design concepts were on display in Golden Lighting’s Dallas showroom at Lightovation. Golden Lighting awarded a cash prize to First Place winner Brianna Langman for her design, Vertex. A prototype of her design was presented next her concept board. “The design was impressive because of its ability to take the environmental consideration of the bathroom mirror into account and use it as a design feature,” Dzurik explains. The two Honorable Mentions went to Shannon Burger and Christa Pineda, who each received gift cards for their designs.
In addition, the company asked its customers and sales reps to review all of the submitted entries and vote in a People’s Choice Award contest. “We were excited for the opportunity to engage with our customers and reps and the chance to surprise a lucky student with an award,” Dzurik comments.
The lucky student was Christa Pineda of St. Augustine, Fla., who is studying Interior Architecture & Design at FSU. Her Infinity sconce was selected as the favorite design at market and she was rewarded with an additional Amazon gift card.
