John Joseph Schlager never missed an edition of the International Lighting Market at the Dallas Market Center. A dedicated manufacturer’s representative who has worked with many of the lighting industry’s prestigious factories, John offered a wealth of business knowledge and wasn’t afraid to speak out on some of the industry’s thorniest and most-sensitive issues. His work ethic and capabilities as a rep were widely recognized when he was nominated by his manufacturers and customers as a Finalist in the ARTS Awards – the first lighting rep to have received such a distinction.
John died suddenly on Friday, August 24, at his home in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania. His is survived by his wife of 30 years, Laraine (Kulp) Schlager, and his two daughters, Linda D. Schlager of Fishkill, NY, and Susan M. Michalko and her husband, Nicholas, of Hopewell Junction, NY, plus hisgrandson, Nicholas John. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph, and a sister, Katherine.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. to the late John J. and Carol (Defemio) Schlager, John was a graduate of St. Augustine High School and was self-employed as a manufacturer’s rep at his firm John Schlager Sales Co. for 40+ years. A former private pilot who often flew out of Pennridge Airport in Pennsylvania, he enjoyed golfing and traveling, especially to Latin America and Mexico. John was also a scuba instructor at various local YMCAs.
