Lighting for Tomorrow 2014 Winners Announced!
On September 16, at one of the most highly attended conferences of the American Lighting Association (ALA) – held this year in Nashville – the names of the winning companies and their respective energy-saving products were revealed during a special ceremony.
The annual Lighting for Tomorrow design competition challenges manufacturers to meet consumer expectations by constantly improving the design of their products and technologies while achieving new heights in energy efficiency. The competition has become an industry indicator of “What’s new” regarding technology and application and this year’s entries reflected several key developments and market trends.
- The percentage of dimmable entries increased, indicating that manufacturers are developing new products to meet the growing needs of residential consumers looking for dimming and controls that can save energy. This year, approximately 85 percent of the fixture, lamp, and retrofit kits submitted provided dimming features.
- When it came to lamps/light sources, it was apparent that manufacturers are improving performance while reducing size and price. Products are also becoming more specialized with lamps that focus on color consistency, high color rendering, and enhanced controllability.
- This year’s product entries are also “smarter,” which means they can be integrated more easily with existing controls and be controlled not only by the usual dedicated control, but also by a variety of common communication devices such as a smart phone or tablet. The judges were pleased to see some truly innovative lighting fixtures, retrofit kits, replacement lamps, and controls systems that demonstrate advances in both design and technology.
The 2014 judging panel, which met in June at Underwriters Laboratories (UL) University in Research Triangle Park, N.C., reviewed a total of 70 products including 40 LED indoor fixtures, 2 LED outdoor fixtures, 9 LED retrofit kits, 15 LED lamps, 3 lighting control devices, and 1 OLED fixture.
The Lighting for Tomorrow winners are showcased in two of the competition’s awards brochures that highlight the LED product and lighting control award recipients. In addition, these products and companies will be featured in journal articles and trade show exhibits throughout the coming year. For more information, visit www.lightingfortomorrow.com
