Virginia sales rep Alan Colker hosts his 33rd seminar with architect/lighting designer Joseph Rey‐Barreau.
For the past 17 years, lighting rep Alan Colker of Alco Lighting Sales, Inc. has hired Joseph Rey‐Barreau, AIA, IES, associate professor of the College of Design at University of Kentucky and consulting director of education for the American Lighting Association (ALA), to conduct a variety of CEU-accredited educational sessions for his distributor customers in the Virginia area.
Colker and Barreau brainstormed several months in advance, evaluating the subject to be covered at the May session. Critical Lighting Facts Every Lighting Associate Should Know to Succeed in a Complex Lighting Market: How to Design a Lighting Plan for a Hotel and a Custom Home With High Efficacy Lighting encompassed a review of commercial and residential lighting design fundamentals, details of the overlapping trends between commercial and residential lighting, plus guidelines on how to do lighting calculations for a hotel lobby, hotel guest room, and corridor. Additional tips for calculating outdoor lighting layouts using solid-state light sources and analysis and discussion of a lighting plan using high‐efficacy lighting for a custom home were also provided.
Approximately 30 lighting professionals from the surrounding area attended the all-day seminar presented by Joe Rey- Barreau and hosted by Alan Colker and his son, Mitch, at Comfort Suites Innsbrook in Glen Allen, Virginia. Attendees were treated to breakfast and a lavish lunch plus were guests at an elegant dinner sponsored by Craftmade and Jeremiah Company.
To commemorate this special anniversary, Alan Colker commissioned a special memento – a colorful blown glass Edison bulb award that was hand-crafted by a glassblower friend – and presented it to Joe Rey-Barreau in appreciation for his commitment to the rep firm’s educational program, which has been held twice a year since 1996.
